Trekking a quick 10-minutes from our hotel downtown, a newly-formed friend and I walked past colorful murals, homeless men, and fallen tree branches, enduring the humidity to grab breakfast at this pristine spot. On an obscure corner, the shop is hardly noticeable, but worth the short traipse through the neighborhood if staying at the various hotels nearby. 

The workers didn’t roll their eyes as my friend and I spent the first ten minutes taking pictures of the café and the beautiful mural that greets visitors.

The sleepy eyed server and other staff were all amicable and helpful, despite our arriving at 8AM on a Sunday in a city known for late nights. My friend ordered a chia pudding and a chai with housemade macadamia/almond milk, while I opted for a nitro and almond butter toast. [Nut butter is life.]

The toast was delicious—a thick slice of white bread spread generously with almond butter and strawberry jam. It was like eating my childhood lunch for breakfast, but without the Peter Pan peanut butter or the ensuing fears of salmonella from said peanut butter’s recalls… Other toast options included avocado or ricotta and jam. Empanadas, fresh baked goods (giant cookies, donuts, vegan zucchini bread), chocolate bars, and bananas were also available, as were bottles of kombucha.

A few other locals stopped in for coffees to-go and we chatted with a lovely Israeli doctoral student who had gorgeous, big brown eyes and a giant cookie for breakfast. The cafe hopes to be a community center located in the entertainment/arts neighborhood and also hosts events. It was a pleasant morning and the food was nothing but good.
